The membership committee’s responsibility, under the general direction of the board, is to recruit new members. Although every chapter member should be a “recruiter,” the membership committee’s function is to establish goals, plan and carry out membership solicitation drives, and follow up on all leads concerning potential members.

Five to nine individuals should serve on the committee, depending on the number of potential members in the chapter’s area and the extent of the area. Committee members living in various parts of the chapter area can easily make personal contact with prospective members.

Names of potential new members come from various sources, including current member listings provided by national MOAA. Other sources are the personnel support units at local military bases, local newspapers, and other media.

If the new member expresses an interest in joining national MOAA, forms provided by national should be given to the member. Since chapters qualify for a “rebate” for recruiting new national members, the application should be reviewed carefully. The application must clearly indicate the “chapter code” so that the proper rebate can be processed.
